GOD BLESS ALL OF OUR LOVED ONES WHO SAW US THROUGH OUR TOUR

We all had loved ones waiting patiently back at home for us to return. Some of us had a wife maybe kids; some of us had a girlfriend; most of us still had parents back then; siblings; or maybe it was a special friend. Each day we had mail call and could not wait until we heard our name called. We would take our letter, find a place to be alone and read our new letter a few times. This made our day. When we did not receive a letter from home, we felt like we were abandoned and all alone. We would dig out an old letter and read it over again. This would help us make it through until the next mail call. Some days we would receive several letters and would be euphoric.

When we wrote home to our loved ones we kept the war out of our letters as much as possible. We did not want our loved ones to be worried about us. We never mentioned that the VC attacked our camp last night, or the last 7 nights. We did not mention that some of our brothers were hurt or worse killed, during the attack. We did not mention that it has been a week or two since we last slept for the entire night. We never mentioned that we were scared to death or that we felt like we would never see our loved ones again. We just wanted to protect our loved ones from what it was we were going through at the time, especially during rough times.

Back at home, our loved ones although worried about us had no problems. Better, think again. Our loved ones saw on the nightly news that heavy fighting was going on in the area of South Vietnam where they knew we were located. They just knew that we were one of the 87 soldiers reported killed that day. They would run to the mailbox whenever they saw the mailman and if they found no letter from us that would confirm our death. They lived our death on almost a daily basis. It was a nightmare for them whenever they saw an Army vehicle driving through our town or neighborhood. Any time there was an unexpected knock on the door their heart would stop beating.

In the letters they wrote to us there was also very little mentioned about the war. Our loved ones were also trying to protect us. To them we had enough on our minds to worry about. When they received no letter from us, they thought the worse and would dig out a past letter and read it over. They did not mention that they had not slept an entire night for the last two weeks. They also were scared to death that they would never see us again.

Therefore, if for some reason you think that you went through something that your loved one(s) will never understand. Maybe it is time that you think again.

God Bless all or our loved ones who saw us through our tour.

Vietnam Vet Wife

(Author - Unknown)

I know it wasn't easy for you,
waiting during the war.
Praying every night and day,
they won't knock at your door.

They always send a soldier,
with a chaplin at his side.
They come to say, we were missing or hurt,
or maybe that we had died.

I know how hard it's been on you,
sometimes you still do it alone.
So thank you for your patience,
and for making us a home.

We can never thank you enough,
for standing by our side.
Acting so brave for the children,
while at night alone you cried.

God bless all you ladies,
you held us while we cried,
You've been with us since Vietnam,
back when we all had pride.

There were quite alot of you,
when the war was at it's peak,
but like many of our country-men,
some of you grew weak.

I do not condemn then,
because they weren't strong,
but some of you stood by us,
you understood the wrong.

Being a Vietnam Vet for some,
HAS BEEN A LONELY LIFE,
except for those, lucky enough,
to have A VIETNAM VET WIFE.

YOU WAITED

(Author - Anonymous)

He was sent to Vietnam and left you all alone
All these feelings hit you that were previously unknown
Heartaches, worries and the tremendous fear
He would be gone from home for at least a year

You held him close and kissed goodbye and then he boarded a plane
Holding back the tears that day was really quite a strain
You made your way back home that day your heart was full of dread
The day was finally over but now you faced a very cold empty bed

In his arms, every night is how you fell asleep
Now you lie awake at night all you do is weep
It was more than a week that passed by before you received a letter
Now you have an address to write to him so you feel a little better

You never heard of the town he was in its name you cannot say
You just waited for him to return and wrote to him each and every day
You had to quit watching the news all it brought was pain
He wrote to you one day “all it does here is rain”

Your wait for him finally ended he was coming home
Your love for him was strong and never did you roam
The long wait for him is over now it is in the past
Your love for him was tested you found that it would last

You think of him as a hero that may or may not be true
But without you standing behind him, he would have never made it through
For all of you that waited you are a hero to
This poem is a tribute especially for you
